Orientation of rock fragments in solifluction deposits, gravitational scree, and fluvial sediments: measurements from the eastern North American Arctic and comparison with other regions of the world

The results of numerous series of measures done in the Eastern part of the North American Arctic between 62° and 81 °N, in Nouveau-Quebec, on Baffin and Ellesmere Islands are as follows: the main axis of rock fragments (pebbles 2 - 20 cm and blocks > 20 cm) is parallel to the greatest slope (i.e: angle of minus 45° with it) in a proportion (median value) of 79.5 % in solifluction deposits, 36 % on gravity slope debris and 33 % in fluviatile or fluvio-glacial Holocene deposits.
These medians correspond, on the whole, with similar measures taken in other parts of the world. However, slightly lower median is noted for the fossil solifluction (75 %) in comparison with active solifluction (79 %) and, finally, in the gravity slope debris there is no predominant orientation in the Arctic, in opposition with other authors' data, but, however, they are well differentiated with respect to solifluction and fluvio-glacial deposits.
