A palaeogeographical analysis of the distribution of loess in Poland and its characteristic lithological features

The subject of this study is the loess deposited during the last glacial period. The regularities in its distribution in southern Poland indicate that its accumulation was mainly limited by climatic humidity and the dynamics of the lower layers of the atmosphere. The distribution of loess in relation to morphological escarpments, its grain size, and its mineral composition indicate that dust transport was short. During the main phases of accumulation, eastern winds predominated, whereas in the final phases, western winds became dominant. This change in wind direction constitutes a characteristic feature of the Polish section of the periglacial loess accumulation zone.
Loess deposits in Poland are characterised by a high degree of grain rounding and a general predominance of the most resistant minerals. In this respect, they show strong similarities to other periglacial sediments occurring in their vicinity. These features indicate the autochthonous nature of the loess material. Both these characteristics and the regularities in its distribution suggest that the studied loess exhibits all the properties of a zonal-geographical phenomenon. This thesis is supported by comparisons with loess deposits from other European regions. Loess occurring in the temperate zone of south-eastern Europe, in particular, shows distinctly different material features and spatial distribution patterns.
